Welcome

Here in what Thoreau called “The Front Range”, on the beautiful high terrain at the gateway to the Monadnock Region, you will find four shelters and two huts - The Warming Hut and Clear View - located on the trail network of the former Windblown Cross Country Ski Area.  They are available to rent to just one group at a time.  During this pandemic they are available to one group over a weekend.  Hikers have easy access to the Wapack Trail, other former ski trails trails are available year round.

Covid restrictions

During the time of this pandemic rentals are restricted to weekend use only from Friday - Sunday (1-3 nights). Only one group may stay per weekend at each shelter or hut.

Thank you for your understanding

Wood is always available for The Warming Hut and Clear View. The shelters have wood but will not be resupplied until Spring, some splitting required; there is a maul at each shelter.  Due to fire danger outside fires need prior permission when there is no snow on the ground.

You must be able to transport yourself and all supplies to your destination wearing skis, hiking shoes, snowshoes or ice cleats as needed . Please note that snowshoes or skis are required if there is snow on the ground to preserve trail conditions. Bare boots leave deep imprints in the snow which can be hazardous.  When there is no or limited snow you might be permitted to drive to the Warming Hut or Clear View (email: alwindblown@gmail.com for permission and a weather report).

ACCOMMODATIONS

About the Shelters & Camping at Windblown

There are four shelters available to rent year round.  These shelters are three sided, offer privacy, require a hike of over a mile with all your gear, have an outhouse nearby, and water is available in season from the stream coming down the east side of Barrett Mountain.

In addition we also have the Warming Hut and Clear View Tiny Home available as well.

Campers can leave a car overnight in the designated area near the lodge. Please note that the lodge is now a private residence and only tenant parking is allowed near the former lodge.

Potable water is available outside of the lodge to the left of Ski Shop entrance. Only one group is allowed to stay at a shelter at one time. You can use your own tent, but you must be near a shelter in order to use an outhouse. Reservations for overnight stays are required and can be completed by:

  1. The best way is to email alwindblown@gmail.com
  2. Or call 603-878-2869 and leave a voicemail with your number stated clearly.

There is no one employed at the ski shop to direct you, you must be able to find shelters and huts with the map provided in the waxing shed which has routes highlighted. Click here for information about finding the shelters. The Windblown map is also available as a PDF download, click here for the map (please note that this PDF does not have routes highlighted.)  The Wapack Trail is open for day hikers with a parking lot on the East side of Route 124 opposite the Windblown sign. The former Windblown XC trails are open for shelter and hut renters only.

This shelter is the most remote shelter and the longest hike from the Windblown parking lot.  For most of the year, water is available from a stream by hiking east down Barrett Mountain (see map in shelter). Outdoor fire by permission only.
